ASSIGNMENT 1: MAKE A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION OF THE FOLLOWING TOPIC.
DEFINING “LEARNING
STYLE”: According
to MacKeracher (1996), learning styles may be thought of as the way in which
people:
- ¾take in information
- ¾select certain information for further processing
- ¾use meanings, values, skills, strategies to solve problems, make decisions, and create new meanings
- ¾change any or all of the processes or structures described in this list
CATEGORISING LEARNING
STYLES
There has been a growth of research into the
subject of learning styles in the last decade or so. The result has been
numerous ways of categorising learning styles. For the purposes of this course,
these have been broadly grouped into four categories:
- ¾physical domain – visual, auditory and motor styles
- ¾cognitive domain – concrete, abstract, sequential, random styles
- ¾affective domain – internal and external psychological and physiological factors that affect how we feel
- ¾culture and learning
Most of us have a preferred learning
domain and within that domain, a preferred learning style.
WHY LOOK AT LEARNING
STYLE?
Firstly, we need to be aware of learning styles
to avoid mismatches in style between instructors and learners. As the cartoon
below nicely illustrates, when we teach using our own preferred style not all
of our students will have the identical style. Inevitably learning will be
diminished for some.
Secondly, we need to assist our students to
identify their learning styles in order that they may build confidence and more
effectively manage their own learning.
Thirdly, in that our own preferred learning
style can influence our approach to planning, implementing and evaluating
instruction, it is equally important for us to be conscious of our style. We
need to become informed about alternate styles, and strengthen our ability to
work in these styles in order to develop instruction for students with a broad
range of styles.
Finally, although most of us have a preferred
learning domain, this does not mean that we don’t use or cannot develop
alternate domains. Similarly, within a domain we are likely to have a preferred
learning style. Becoming aware of other styles and working to strengthen weaker
ones can enhance learning by providing a variety of strategies for taking in
and processing information.
INTRODUCTION
When we speak of learning styles in the
physical domain, we are referring to people who feel most comfortable using
their physical senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste when
learning. Although we use all or most our senses when learning, many of us have
a strong preference for one modality over another for taking in and processing
information. The predominant physical or sensory styles are described in the
following paragraphs.
VISUAL STYLE
Learners with a visual style prefer to use
their eyes to learn; that is, see something in writing, watch a
demonstration or video, and so on. In order to learn most effectively, these
learners need to “see” the information or material in one form or another, thus
the use of visual aids such will enhance learning. For example, when learning
to read, these learners are likely to prefer a whole word versus phonetic
approach.
AUDITORY STYLE
Learners with an auditory style will prefer
to use their hearing to learn; that is, listen to a lecture about a
certain topic rather than read about it, talk about the material with others or
through “self-talk” (talking to themselves “in their heads”). For
example, contrary to visual learners these students are likely to learn to read
best when a phonetic approach is used.
MOTOR STYLE
This style is also referred to as a
kinaesthetic or physical style. Learners who prefer this style can be thought
of as “hands on” learners. That is, they need to do an activity, practise
a skill or manipulate material physically in order to learn most effectively.
For example, when learning to spell these learners are likely to prefer writing
out words since muscle movement assists in their learning process.
IDENTIFYING PHYSICAL
LEARNING STYLE: Identifying
learners’ preferred physical learning style can be approached in either a formal
or informal way. Informally, learning sessions can be planned to incorporate
approaches and learning aids appropriate for each style. The practitioner would
then simply note what seems to work best with each learner. This will be easier
to accomplish with small rather than large groups, and in individual tutoring
situations.
With medium to larger groups, a more formal
approach in which learners complete a questionnaire may be more advantageous. A
“Physical Learning Styles Questionnaire” has been included at the end of this
module and may be reproduced for use by programs.
ADDRESSING PHYSICAL
STYLE IN INSTRUCTION:
Of the different types of learning styles discussed in this course, physical
style is perhaps the simplest and most straightforward to identify and
incorporate into instruction. Once you have identified your learners’ preferred
physical learning style, learning sessions can be easily structured to
specifically address each or all of the styles. Listed below are some
instructional techniques and learning aids for each style. Some techniques and
aids can be used effectively for more than one style.
¾TECHNIQUES AND
LEARNING AIDS FOR VISUAL STYLE - Maximum use of visual aids will greatly enhance learning for
individuals with a visual style. Some examples of visual aids include: videos
and films, written materials with lots of graphics (i.e., charts, tables,
pictures/clip art, photographs, etc.), overhead projectors, computers, and so
on. In general, any technique that allows these learners to use their eyes will
be effective, so instruction should include activities that involve watching,
reading and writing. For example, if a student is learning about pronouns
(e.g., “I,” “he,” “they,” etc), reading through a story and highlighting all
the pronouns together would be effective.
¾TECHNIQUES AND
LEARNING AIDS FOR AUDITORY STYLE - Providing maximum opportunities to “hear” the material to be
learned will prove most useful for individuals with an auditory style. In
general, any technique that involves listening and/or talking will be
effective. Some examples include: group discussions, lectures, guest speakers,
reading out loud, listening to cassettes/videos/films, and so on. Contrary to
the approach used with the visual learner above when looking at pronouns,
auditory learners need to hear the material. Thus, one approach might be to
read a story and have the learner stop you whenever he/she hears a pronoun.
¾TECHNIQUES AND
LEARNING AIDS FOR MOTOR STYLE - Individuals with a motor style need to be physically involved in
their learning, thus the key to enhancing their learning is lots of “hands on”
activities. Some effective approaches include: field trips, experiments, role
playing, puzzles and games, three dimensional learning aids, or more generally,
writing things out and reading out loud. In the case of learning about pronouns
for example, one approach might be to break a story into four parts, post the
parts around the room, and have the students go around to the “stations” and
write out the pronouns at each.
The following are techniques or learning aids that
are most effective with a particular physical style. Please check the
appropriate column for each:
Visual Auditory Motor
a. Read out loud
c. Trace letters and numbers
d. Beat out syllables of words for student
e. Have learner beat out syllables
f. Show a video
g. Use different fonts or graphics
h. Give verbal directions
i. Give written directions
j. Learners use a computer
k. Learners read silently to themselves from a computer screen
l. Learners listen to tapes of
themselves reading
ASSIGNMENT 3:
Please complete the ”PHYSICAL
LEARNING STYLES QUESTIONNAIRE” and answer the following questions on a
separate page.
- According to the questionnaire, what is your preferred physical learning style?
- What are several ways that being aware of their preferred physical learning style might help your learners to manage their learning better?
- If you think about your personal instructional approach, is your physical learning style reflected in how you plan and conduct learning sessions (e.g., if you are a visual learner, you may tend to use a lot of visual aids in your classes)? Explain.
- You are going to teach a group of Stage 1 and 2 learners about contractions, (i.e., that is = that’s, I am = I’m, they are = they’re). Describe how you might teach contractions for each style.

In general, learning styles refer to the different preferences and strategies accepted and used by learners during the process of learning. Strictly speaking, learning styles are: various approaches or ways of learning. They involve educating methods, particular to an individual that are presumed to allow that individual to learn best
ReplyDeleteTHERE HAS BEEN ALOT OF RESEARCH IN LEARNING STYLE IN THE LAST DECADES

1: There are different learning style and I considere I have a little bit of each one However according to the physical learning style questionnaire I should choose one So for learning I would prefer visual style because when I see it, I can understand better. For me it's like a mix because I can watch a movie and listen to it but if I have something to see, it will be better.
2: There are 2 ways
First We as teachers shouldn't focus in our own learning style for teaching students if not be aware that students have their own learning style.
Second Students should identify their learning style because that way they build confident and manage their own learning style.
Third our own style can influence in our approach to planning, implementing and evaluating instruction so we must be aware. We should know about alternative styles to strengthen us and have a high range of styles to develop instruction for students.
3: We as teachers have our learning style however if we are visual we shouldn't teach like our learning style because we need to be focus in our students. I mean we should knowm them. Students are different, each one has his/her learning style. So we as professional should prepare for each one.
3:Contractions for each learling style.
Visual style: a text with images. Images to describe them (contraction).
Auditory style: by a lecture that contains the use of contrations.
Motor style: could be by a song created by me where they can use their body and do signals for the contractions.

According to the questionnaire, what is your preferred style of physical learning?
ReplyDeleteMy preferred physical learning style is 2 visual and auditory, since in the visual the student or the apprentice can absorb all the knowledge that is provided visually and in this way this person can learn either using diagrams diagrams or in the case of children, using colorful materials that attract their attention and in the Auditory, the students or the apprentice uses more the cerebral auditory connection to thus form a ball of knowledge and be absorbed by the brain, and by songs, audio books and more auditory content the student learns.
What are the various ways in which knowledge of your preferred physical learning style could help your students better manage their learning?
My preferred style of physical learning could help different students to manage better ways of learning, since in the visual they support through multimedia content, for me it is more fun to show content that attracts the attention of the viewer and he wants to see my material, created by me as the educator.
In the case of the Auditory, I as an educator could create or implement self-recordings so that they improve their pronunciation and they themselves evaluate and improve, I could also apply games (debates, oratories and more) all this recording them so that they are heard or shown Audio books and podcast with language teaching.
Si piensa en su enfoque de instrucción personal, ¿se refleja su estilo de aprendizaje físico en la forma en que planifica y conduce las sesiones de aprendizaje (por ejemplo, si es un alumno visual, puede tender a usar muchas ayudas visuales en sus clases)? Explique.
If you think about your personal instructional approach, is your physical learning style reflected in the way you plan and conduct the learning sessions (for example, if you are a visual student, you can tend to use many visual aids in your classes) ? Explain
I think that first of all we should make an evaluation of each student in order to notice or see how the learning style of each one is, I think that as teachers of a foreign language we must fill ourselves with patience, because it is not easy to teach a child that normally does not speak the English language, that only studies it in school, and not at home, so I think that not only apply the visual style but try to teach, as each student can do, make a percentage of who or how many they learn through contentious, visual or auditory or kinestetic or others.
You will teach a group of Stage 1 and 2 students about contractions (that is, that is = that is, I am = I am, they are = are). Describe how you could teach contractions for each style.
Personally I feel that I am not yet prepared to teach contractions, but if it were the case of another topic, I would try to make my own contents, that is if it was from Audio I would make my own PODCAST and if it is visual I would try to teach with a video or didactic materials visuals that call your attention, and so on with each of the styles.
● ASSIGNMENT 3:
ReplyDeleteSurisaday Gordòn
1.According to the questionnaire, what is your preferred physical learning style?
My preferred physical learning style according to the questionnaire are two visual style and motor style.
▪︎Visual style because when I see a movie or video image it is easier for me to explain it and remember it in the same way.
▪︎Motor style because I am a person who is facilitated to learn and understand the lessons through different activities and above all I remember that when I was in elementary school I learned my exercises reading aloud and after that I asked myself orally and written that way I learned things well and it was not all by heart but in doing so I imagined things.
That's why I consider those preferred learning styles.
2.What are several ways that being aware of their preferred physical learning style might help your learners to manage their learning better?
I consider that my preferred learning styles could help students in several ways since I have two learning styles where students could understand the class.
Visual style would learn through videos, images, movies and activities that include watching, reading and writing
Motor style could learn to read and write bus activities high, practices that are dynamic for them as games that way is kept active, it attracts attention and is learning without feeling frustrated to memorize something.
But as a teacher we must use all three learning styles to teach our classes that way we could help our students even better because not everyone has the same learning style.
3.If you think about your personal instructional approach, is your physical learning style reflected in how you plan and conduct learning sessions (e.g., if you are a visual learner, you may tend to use a lot of visual aids in your classes)?
I think that before doing the planning with my personal instructional approach , I must make an evaluation to diagnose the students' learning style since it is my responsibility as a teacher for them to understand the class.
If I have a student of visual style, I would give the classes through images, slides, interesting videos related to the topic that explain the lessons.
4.You are going to teach a group of Stage 1 and 2 learners about contractions, (i.e., that is = that’s, I am = I’m, they are = they’re). Describe how you might teach contractions for each style.
I used to teach contractions with each learning style
~Visual style: I would use a slide where a writer can see it with an example of how to use it with images.
~Auditory style with a review or reading that first contains a brief simple explanation of the contractions, second to put the same reading with a listening, third to repeat the contractions aloud.
~Motor style would use flash card how to use contractions or could make a game where it would be like a puzzle that consists of looking for the one that corresponds to that is = that’s,
I am = I’m,
they are = they’re
you are = you're
That way I could tell if he understood.

1. According to the questionnaire, what is your preferred physical learning style?
Among all the different learning style I prefer the auditory style because when I heard something I can image what is happening in that story or topic it means to create my own opinion about it and then talk to me and listen to myself.
2. What are several ways that being aware of their preferred physical learning might help your learners to manage their learning better?
The teacher has to know that his or her presence in the classroom is to teach and help the student reach their own development
The main tool of the student is his or her way of learning and as teacher we must help them develop it but without limiting them to using other ways to learn.
3. If you think about your personal approach, is your physical learning style reflected in how you plan and conduct learning sessions (e.g.,if you are a visual learner, you may tend to use a lot of visual aids in your classes)? Explain
I think that when the teacher stands in front of the students the most important thing is that they can understand the lesson the teacher must forget about himself and be able to teach using any learning style.
4. You are going to teach a gruop of stage 1 and 2 learners about contractions, (...i,e that is = that's, I am = I'm, they are = they're). Describe how you might teach to contractions for each style.
Visual style: I would use several images related to the topic while I teach.
Auditory style: I would teach it using readings that explain the topic I would read it several times.
Motor style: in this style we can include muscle movement for that reason I can teach the contractions through songs or games.
By: Brenda Molina.
1.According to the questionnaire, what is your preferred physical learning style?
ReplyDeleteMy physical learning style is motor and visual. since the child or student can observe everything that is provided to him visually so that he learns using materials that attract his attention such as colors and didactic games. And at the same time motor learning helps them stay physically active and be able to observe what has been taught through different physical activities and be able to remember what they have learned from each lesson taught.
2.What are several ways that being aware of their preferred physical learning style might help your learners to manage their learning better?
I think that my preferred learning style could help students in various ways since the two learning styles that I would implement so that they can easily understand the class such as visual through power point, color videos and images and motor activities could develop their skills such as: paint, draw, read, write. I would also implement the practices that are: games that way would remain active and thus not be frustrated at the time of learning.
3.If you think about your personal instructional approach, is your physical learning style reflected in how you plan and conduct learning sessions (e.g., if you are a visual aid in your classes)? Explain.
Consider that before applying any learning style I must evaluate the student to analyze which learning style is most feasible for them. To focus and plan responsibly. so that students can understand the classes easily implement the use of color images and visual audio to attract their attention and make them feel interested in the classes. If in my group of students there was a child whose learning style was auditory, I would use audio slides with sounds.
4.You are going to teach a group of stage 1 and 2 learning about contractions, (i.e.; that is= that’s I am= I’m, they are= they’re). Describe how you might teach contractions for each style.
Visual Style: I would use colored cardstock with clear examples with images alluding to the indicated theme.
Auditory Style: Aria a brief reading and simple explanation of the contractions and often repeat the contractions aloud.
Motor Style: Use explanatory videos on how to use contractions and games on how to look for contractions that correspond to the explanation given in the video.

WHAT ARE SEVERAL WAYS THAT BEING AWARE OF THEIR PREFERRED PHYSICAL LEARNING STYLE MIGHT HELP YOUR LEARNERS TO MANAGE THEIR LEARNING BETTER?
In my opinion this is the best method to work with kids. This method is really active and the students learn playing games. If I have to work with this method I will make trips and visits to different places, depending of the lessons. I will work using role-play and the theory lesson must have to be for a short time, because the physical learners can’t still for long, it is better work and study with breaks.
IF YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH, IS YOUR PHYSICAL LEARNING STYLE REFLECTED IN HOW YOU PLAN AND CONDUCT LEARNING SESSIONS (E.G., IF YOU ARE A VISUAL LEARNER, YOU MAY TEND TO USE A LOT OF VISUAL AIDS IN YOUR CLASSES)? EXPLAIN.
Last semester I was reading about a story “Pygmalion effect” where explain how the teachers behavior impacts in students and change their opinions and perspective and also their own expectative of learning. Teachers have a big influence in their students, but it is important to know that we can’t be teachers without students, who are the main objective of education. That’s why we must have to learn of them to discover their learning styles and give them our best effort and teach with a high quality of education.
